Garrucha is a municipality of the province of Almeria, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, located 93 km north of the capital Almeria. The town of Garrucha extends over 0.36 Km² and has 4.643 inhabitants called 'Garrucheros'.![]() The two main productive activities are Fishing and Tourism. This fishing port is the second most important in the province and fishing provides its main source of income. The focal point of the town is the attractive harbour, where the day's catch is auctioned each afternoon around 5 PM on the fish market. The fishermen supply the many seafood restaurants which line the promenade and in the summer display a wonderful array of fish and shellfish. Garrucha is also called the "city of prawns" : half of the fishing revenues are coming from the famous red prawns. Garrucha is located between the beaches of historic Mojacar and the next town of Vera. The origin of the town dates back to the 16th century, when it was founded by a group of fishermen, who protected themselves from pirate attacks by constructing a tower. The promenade (Paseo Maritimo) runs the length of the town and is a peaceful oasis for locals and visitors, where they can relax and walk amongst the palm trees. The width of its entrance is 170 mts. wide and its depth 14 mts, running from 1'5 to 3'5 inside the harbour with a sandy anchorage. 25% of its 221 berths, are in rent basis and run from 5 to 12 mts, long.
